Lot 395 1853 Liberty Head Large One Cent

An original 1853 United States Liberty Head large cent, also known as the Braided Hair type, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies, with the date 1853 below. The reverse displays a laurel wreath encircling the denomination ONE CENT, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the perimeter. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this later large cent issue represents the final design evolution before the series ended in 1857.
