Lot 391 1823 Liberty Head Large One Cent

An early 19th century United States large cent featuring the Liberty Head design, also known as the Coronet Head type. The obverse depicts a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1823 below. The reverse bears the inscription ONE CENT encircled by a laurel wreath and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Composed of pure copper, this issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and belongs to the Matron Head series designed by Robert Scot and modified by John Reich. The 1823 dated large cent is a notably scarce issue within the series due to limited surviving examples and varieties such as the "1823/2" overdate. Exhibits circulated condition with visible wear consistent with age.
