Lot 266 Doulton Lambeth Natural Foliage Stoneware Teapot with Sterling Silver Mounts, 1904

This lot features a Doulton Lambeth glazed stoneware teapot decorated in the Natural Foliage pattern. The piece is crafted from buff-colored stoneware with a bulbous body, a loop handle with a thumb-rest spur, and a tapered spout, both finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze. The exterior of the teapot and the domed lid are decorated with a series of overlapping autumn leaves in shades of russet, brown, and deep red. These leaves were created by pressing actual foliage into the wet clay before firing, a characteristic technique of the Doulton Lambeth studio. The background features a mottled, glossy glaze in green, ochre, and yellow tones. The teapot is fitted with sterling silver mounts on the collar and the rim of the lid. The base of the teapot displays several marks including the circular Doulton Lambeth factory stamp with a central cross, the stamped pattern number 2448, the incised letters BOO and h, and a small circular mark containing the number 3. The silver mount on the collar is hallmarked with the sponsor mark CS FS for Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders and James Francis Hollings Shepherd, the lion passant for sterling silver, the Chester assay office mark of three wheat sheaves and a sword, and the date letter D for 1904.
