Lot 309 1826 Liberty Head Large Cent
An early 19th century U.S. copper large cent featuring the Liberty Head or Matron Head design. The obverse depicts Liberty facing left, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY inscribed on her headband and the date 1826 below. The reverse bears the denomination ONE CENT encircled by a laurel wreath, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the rim. Designed by Robert Scot and John Reich, this type was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1816 through 1839. Composed of pure copper, the coin displays the distinctive bold relief and classic engraving style characteristic of early American coinage.
