Lot 305 2pc 1141 - 1173 Hungary Silver Denar - Geza II and Stephen III

Scarce early medieval Hungarian silver denars from the Arpad dynasty, including an issue of Geza II (1141 - 1162) and another of Stephen III (1161 -1173), both struck in fine silver on small flans of approximately 13-14 mm. The Geza II obol denar displays the distinctive early cross and circle motif within linear border, typical of mid 12th century minting under Byzantine and Western European stylistic influence. The Stephen III example - often termed the Istvan denar, bears a central cross with large annulet at top and three crescent-like ornaments beneath, an attribution referenced to Rethy 137. Both coins exhibit pleasing detail for their type, with light grey to toned surfaces and full legends discernible in parts, showing honest medieval strike characteristics. Coins of this era remain elusive, particularly paired examples from successive Arpad rulers, representing an important segment of Central European feudal coinage.
