The boy is posed leaning on a walking stick upon a naturalistic, earthy base, with a square, woven-textured basket strapped to his shoulders designed to hold matches. The interior of the basket contains a handwritten antique dealer's label identifying the piece as a German Match Holder with inventory number 8370.
