Lot 45 Alexander Kautsch Art Nouveau Bronze Relief Plaque, Aux Morts, after Paul-Albert Bartholome

This bronze relief plaque was created by the medallist Alexander Kautsch (Austrian, 1867-1930) after the celebrated 1899 monument by Paul-Albert Bartholome (French, 1848-1928) located in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Executed in the Symbolist style, the work depicts a central doorway inscribed AUX MORTS toward which a group of mourning figures congregate in various expressive states of grief. A smaller recessed scene below shows a deceased couple in repose. The plaque is cast in bronze with a consistent golden-brown patina. It is inscribed along the lower edge D APRES A. BARTHOLOME to the left and signed A. KAUTSCH to the right. There are no visible foundry marks or edition numbers. The plaque is self-contained without a separate base or plinth. 3.15 x 4.33 x 0.20 inches.
