Lot 2 Continental Empire–Biedermeier Secrétaire à Abattant with Mirrored Architectural Interior a
Description
Continental secrétaire à abattant, probably German or Austrian, in the Empire-to-Biedermeier transition, circa 1825–1835. Veneered over pine in a warm-toned figured wood, the exact primary veneer is difficult to confirm. The drop front opens to a striking fitted interior with mirrored back, blackened architectural framing, gilt-highlighted columns, pigeonholes, multiple small drawers, and a concealed secret compartment. The exterior and highly theatrical interior are very much in keeping with Central European furniture made as Empire classicism softened into early Biedermeier taste. Biedermeier developed chiefly in Germany and Austria, while retaining simplified forms derived from Empire design.
Condition
All drawers appear present, functional, and generally sound. The piece shows an old restoration, likely early 20th century, with visible veneer patching and surface retouching. There are losses and wear to the black lacquered writing surface and interior framing, visible age cracks and veneer splits, and general scratches and use wear consistent with age, but that add interest. The interior remains unusually elaborate and attractive, and the secret compartment is a strong selling feature. A highly decorative and desirable early 19th-century secrétaire. A piece with character!
