Lot 316 Wedgwood Bleu Souffle Lustre Polar Bear Large Vase
Large Wedgwood porcelain vase designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones in a traditional baluster form, with a rounded body, tapering pedestal foot, and flared neck with wide rim. The exterior is finished in a powder blue lustre glaze with mottled texture, decorated with an enamel and gilt scene of a polar bear standing on an ice floe amid white-capped waves. The neck and reverse feature birds in flight rendered in white with gilt accents. A gilded foliate band encircles the neck, and the foot is decorated with a continuous cresting wave border; both rims are gilt. The powder blue, or bleu souffle, ground reflects Wedgwood's early 20th-century experimentation inspired by 18th-century Chinese porcelains with chuiqing ("blown blue") glaze and gilded decoration. The underside bears the Wedgwood Portland vase mark,
