Lot 270 Wedgwood Etruria Augustus Jansson Playing Card Plate, King of Diamonds
This Wedgwood earthenware plate is part of the Playing Card series designed by Augustus L. Jansson, circa 1909. The circular creamware plate features a flat rim decorated with a blue transfer-printed border of stylized floral chrysanthemum motifs. The central well contains a hand-painted polychrome illustration of a stylized playing-card figure representing the King of Diamonds. Surrounding the figure is hand-lettered text in black reading: ye KING OF DIAMONDS I AM TOLD IS GUARDIAN OF LIFE'S POTTS OF GOLD. A small black monogram, appearing to be the letters H and E, is located near the figure's foot. The reverse bears a blue printed mark for Wedgwood, Etruria, England, along with an impressed Wedgwood mark. A hand-painted red alphanumeric code A 7796 is present. This item includes provenance from the Rubin Collection, indicated by a circular silver-toned label.
