Lot 269 Wedgwood Augustus Jansson Playing Card Plate, Queen of Hearts
A Wedgwood earthenware charger from the Picture Card series designed by American artist Augustus L. Jansson. The central well features a stylized illustration of the Queen of Hearts depicted as a shepherdess, rendered in a bold illustrative style with orange, yellow, and black pigments. The figure holds a shepherd's crook and a heart-shaped purse, flanked by the transfer-printed verse: ye QUEENE OF HEARTS, A SHEPHERDESS FAYRE, THAT HERDS A HOST OF LOVERS RARE. A small AJ monogram is located near the figure's foot. The wide rim is decorated with concentric bands featuring geometric and stylized floral patterns in shades of sage green, ochre, and dark brown. The reverse bears the printed marks for Wedgwood, Etruria, England, along with the British Registered Design number 550208 and a 1909 copyright notice for Augustus L. Jansson, West Somerville, Mass.
