Lot 258 Wedgwood Whiteware Mythological Charger by J.D. Rochfort, London, 1865

This hand-painted ceramic whiteware plate or charger was decorated by the artist John Downes Rochfort in London in 1865. The circular form features a sophisticated grisaille style decoration with blue-gray washes, fine black-line detailing, and yellow-ochre accents. The central motif consists of a medallion containing a heraldic-style crest with a bird, possibly an eagle, perched atop a dark form, flanked by green and yellow foliage. Surrounding the center is a complex mythological frieze depicting tritons blowing conch shells, mermaids, and putti amidst a rocky seascape, a theme resembling Arion on a dolphin or sea-god motifs from 16th-century engravings. The lower right edge of the main scene is dated 1865. The reverse of the charger is inscribed in hand-painted script: Agur Lurdine -, J. D. Rochfort p., 1865., London. The name Mrs Hildyard is hand-painted in block letters in three locations, with two instances being heavily smeared. Additional markings include a handwritten 90 and two stickers from the Zeitlin Collection. Wedgwood impressed mark on reverse.
