Lot 241 Wedgwood Black Basalt and Cream Sprigged Relief Charger with Musical Putti
This circular charger is crafted from unglazed black basalt stoneware by Wedgwood. The piece features applied white sprigged relief decoration throughout. The central medallion depicts a classical scene of four putti engaged in musical activities, including playing a lyre and flute, reading from a scroll, and standing by a small wheeled chariot. This central motif is surrounded by a radial sunburst pattern of white bars extending toward the rim. The outer edge is finished with a continuous border of acanthus leaf sprigs. The reverse of the charger bears the incised letters KD within the foot rim, a mark associated with the Wedgwood factory. Provenance is indicated by a yellow collection sticker for Earl Buckman and a white sticker for the Rubin Collection, corresponding with the ww rubin designation.
