Lot 228 Doulton Lambeth Rix's Patent Marqueterie Stoneware Vase
This Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase is produced using Wilton Rix's patent for marqueterie ware, a technique involving the inlaying of different colored clays. The vessel features an oval bulbous form with a scalloped rim, two scroll handles, and a flared, lobed pedestal foot. The exterior is decorated with an intricate mosaic-like pattern of inlaid clays in shades of blue, tan, gray, and brown. Centered on each side is an applied jasper-style medallion in sage green with white bas-relief classical figures; one side depicts a seated youth playing a double flute, while the opposite side shows a standing female figure in classical drapery. These medallions are framed with white beaded slip decoration and gold-painted borders. Extensive gilding is applied to the rim, handles, and foot. The interior of the rim displays a geometric patterned border. The base bears a circular printed mark reading DOULTONS PATENT LAMBETH ENGLAND, flanked by the words RIX'S and MARQUETERIE. An impressed four-digit number 3013 is located above the mark. Hand-written characters in dark ink include 622 followed by a mark resembling a crossed X over 10/18 and the letters SS.
