Lot 218 Doulton Lambeth by Mark V. Marshall Stoneware Justice Vase
An English art pottery vase by Doulton Lambeth, designed by Mark V. Marshall. This pot formed stoneware example features a salt glazed finish in contrasting tones of light and dark brown. The body is decorated in relief with a circular cartouche depicting the allegorical figure of Justice, shown blindfolded and kneeling while holding the Scales of Justice. Surrounding the central scene are modeled floral and foliate motifs that extend outward, culminating in a bird interpreted as either a peacock or phoenix, both symbols historically associated with justice and virtue. The shoulder and neck are rendered in a deeper brown glaze and further embellished with raised floral and foliate ornamentation, completing the richly textured design. The underside is marked with the Doulton Lambeth impressed stamp and the Mark V. Marshall monogram.
