Lot 217 Mark V. Marshall for Martin Brothers Stoneware Fish Bowl, circa 1870s

This figural stoneware vessel is a Martin ware fish bowl decorated by Mark V. Marshall, dating to circa 1870s. The hand-built stoneware body is sculpted in the form of a fish with a bulbous shape and a tapered tail fin. The head features prominent, concentrically incised eyes, and the top of the vessel opens into a wide, undulating, and irregularly flared rim with a hand-pinched quality. The exterior surface is detailed with impressed and incised textures representing scales and fins. The piece is finished in a thick, mottled glaze in shades of deep iron-brown and tan, which breaks into lighter cream and tan tones over the raised textures. The interior is finished with a uniform, dark glossy brown glaze. The unglazed circular base bears the incised monogram MVM and the number 858.
