Lot 215 Martin Brothers Egyptian Revival Salt-Glazed Stoneware Vase, 1876

This cylindrical stoneware vase is a significant example of early Martinware, produced by Robert Wallace Martin. The vessel is constructed of salt-glazed stoneware with a buff-colored ground and features an elaborate Egyptian Revival decorative scheme. The central body is decorated with incised and slip-painted figures rendered in brown tones, including the jackal-headed god Anubis, a seated deity holding a crook and flail, and a standing male figure in a traditional pleated kilt. The background is filled with vertically arranged registers of incised faux hieroglyphs. Deep cobalt blue glaze bands encircle the rim and the base, with the lower band featuring an incised geometric chevron pattern. The base of the vase is incised with the script mark RW Martin London on base, followed by date 4-1876. An additional incised numeral 5 is located in the upper right quadrant of the base.
