Lot 214 Robert Wallace Martin for Martin Brothers Pottery Double-Sided Stoneware Face Jug, 1892
This salt-glazed stoneware double-sided face jug is by Robert Wallace Martin for Martin Brothers pottery. The vessel is hand-modeled to one side with a smiling face and the other with a pouting face. The body of the jug is finished in a matte slate-gray salt glaze with visible tool marks and fine striations throughout the surface to suggest hair and skin texture. The form includes a hand-pulled handle and a pinched pouring spout. The base is incised with the script: R W Martin, London & Southall, 22 / 2 / 92, and a small star or cross mark. This piece represents a classic example of late 19th-century British Art Pottery in the grotesque style, signed and dated by the maker.
