Lot 197 Coalport Advertising Figurine, Farewell Golly

During a visit to the United States prior to World War I, John Robertson observed children playing with black rag dolls known as "Gollys" and subsequently adopted the character as a mascot for his jam company. This Coalport porcelain figurine, titled Farewell Golly, was issued as a limited-edition, 1074 out of 2000, advertising collectible for Robertson's Golden Shred marmalade. The figure depicts the mascot standing, holding a brown suitcase in the left hand and a jar of Golden Shred tucked beneath the right arm. He is dressed in a blue tailcoat, yellow waistcoat, red-and-white polka-dot bowtie, red trousers, and black shoes. The figure stands on a circular base with a green top, inscribed "Golly It's Good!" along the front edge. The underside bears the Coalport backstamp. Certificate of Authenticity included.
