Lot 190 Royal Doulton Advertising Figurine, Colman's Starch Girl MCL31
Colman's, renowned for its mustard, was established in 1814 by Jeremiah Colman at Stoke Holy Cross near Norwich, England. Beginning as a flour miller, Colman expanded into mustard production, and by the mid-19th century the business had grown into a leading manufacturer of starch, laundry blue, and mustard. The company was also noted for its progressive philanthropy, developing one of the United Kingdom's earliest industrial welfare programs for its workforce. This figurine, issued in 2011 by Millennium Collectables Ltd., is a limited edition example numbered 251 of 400. It portrays a young girl wearing a ruffled pink dress and a large, tiered bonnet, seated on a white cloth draped over a woven laundry basket. She holds two miniature boxes of Colman's Starch. The circular base has a marbled top and a brown transfer-printed inscription along the front edge reading Colman's Starch is pure. The underside bears the Royal Doulton backstamp. Certificate of Authenticity included.
