Lot 163 Spode Winston Churchill Commemorative Bone China Limited Edition Covered Urn
A fine bone china commemorative covered urn produced by Spode in 1965 to honor Sir Winston Churchill. This piece was specially commissioned by the luxury retailer Thomas Goode and Company, London. It is a limited edition vessel, designated as number 39 of 125. The urn features a tapered body, a stepped foot, and a domed lid with a gilded bud-form finial. The decoration consists of a rich claret ground with extensive hand-applied gilding. The front displays a central circular medallion with a transfer-printed portrait of Churchill, surrounded by a blue garter with the gilt motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense and flanked by golden heraldic lions. Banners below note his birth and death dates (November 30th 1874 and January 24th 1965) with the inscription In Grateful Remembrance. The back features a white panel with a gilded border containing excerpts from his wartime speeches, including We shall never surrender and This was their finest hour. Gilt text around the upper rim lists his honors (KG, PC, OM, CH, FRS), while the foot lists his terms as Prime Minister and his personal motto. The base of the foot identifies him as an Honorary Citizen of the United States. The lower portion of the body and the lid are decorated with relief-molded white acanthus-style foliage. The underside of the base features a brown Spode Bone China England 1965 transfer mark and gold lettering detailing the commission and edition number.
