Lot 147 Two Minton Bone China Limited Edition The Queen's Silver Jubilee Candlestick Holders
A pair of Minton fine bone china figural candlesticks titled The Queen's Silver Jubilee Candlesticks, produced in 1977 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II. The set depicts the heraldic beasts of the Royal Arms: the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland. The Lion is decorated in 22-karat gold gilding, depicted sejant and holding a shield featuring the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom in polychrome enamels. The Unicorn is rendered in a white glaze with a gilded horn, mane, and crown-and-chain collar, holding a shield with the red Lion Rampant of Scotland on a gold ground. Both figures are set upon circular, stepped bases decorated with concentric red and gold bands and a formal gilt laurel leaf border. The candle nozzles are designed as stylized crowns. The figures were modeled by William K. Harper under the direction of Eric Griffiths, Minton's then-Director of Sculpture. The underside of each candlestick features marks applied in gold. The outer edge of the base reads: Number 63 of a Limited Edition of 250 - 1977 - The Queen's Silver Jubilee - 1952. The central maker's mark consists of a laurel wreath enclosing Founded Minton 1793, with Bone China and Made in England printed below. A retailer mark for Mulberry Hall York Fine China and Crystal Specialists is also present. This lot includes the original blue satin-lined presentation box, a historical descriptive pamphlet, and a certificate of authenticity identifying this set as pair number 63 of 250, signed by Art Director Eric Griffiths.
