Lot 94 Royal Doulton Prototype Figurine, Harlequina

Designed by Valerie Annand, this Royal Doulton glazed figurine is a factory prototype of the Harlequina model, HN5306. Celebrating the rich tradition of comic performance across cultures, the design draws inspiration from 16th-century Commedia dell'arte, which influenced European clowning through pantomime, vaudeville, and touring circuses of the 19th and 20th centuries. The figure captures a female performer in a lively, dynamic pose, wearing a pink tiered dress decorated with black stars and white ruffles edged in black, complemented by a pointed cone hat and black high-heeled shoes. She is accompanied by five vibrant orbs in yellow, green, magenta, purple, and blue. The piece is presented on a cream-colored stylized base accented with black undulating lines. The underside bears the Royal Doulton Prototype Only backstamp.
