Lot 72 Babbacombe Pottery Lownds Pateman Character Jug, Hunting Fox

A glazed earthenware character jug produced by Babbacombe Pottery in England by Lownds Pateman. The vessel is modeled in the form of an anthropomorphic hunting fox dressed in formal equestrian attire. The fox is depicted wearing a black top hat that forms the rim and pouring spout of the jug. The figure is further detailed with a white cravat and a black waistcoat over a red hunting jacket base. The handle is realistically modeled in the shape of a fox tail or brush.The item features molded details with hand-painted underglaze decoration. Fine brushwork is used to simulate the texture of fur in shades of orange, brown, and black. The piece is finished with a high-gloss clear glaze. The underside of the base features a green printed mark in a circular orientation reading BABBACOMBE POTTERY, Made in England by LOWNDS PATEMAN. The reverse of the red base features embossed capital letters reading HUNTING FOX.
