Lot 64 Cauldon for Tiffany & Co. Hand Painted Porcelain Game Bird Plate

This porcelain cabinet plate was manufactured by Cauldon, formerly Brown-Westhead, Moore and Co, in England for the American retailer Tiffany and Co of New York. The central reserve features a hand-painted scene of a blackcock in flight over a moorland landscape with rocky outcroppings and purple-toned hills under a hazy sky. The scene is signed D. Birbeck in the lower left. The plate features a scalloped rim and a wide border decorated with heavy, raised gilding in a repeating scrolling foliate and shell pattern. The underside is marked with a brown printed Cauldon England stamp and a circular retailer mark containing the text Brown-Westhead Moore and Co, Cauldon Place, England, and Tiffany and Co New-York. The title Blackcock and the alphanumeric code A 1016 are handwritten in red enamel. A small printed label with the number 746 and a biographical sticker regarding the artist Donald Birbeck are also present on the base.
