Lot 63 Cauldon for Tiffany & Co. Porcelain Game Bird Plate Painted by Donald Birbeck
This porcelain cabinet plate was manufactured by Cauldon, also known as Brown-Westhead Moore and Co, in England for the United States market. The central well features a hand-painted scene of a ruffed grouse perched on a branch within an atmospheric landscape, signed D. Birbeck in the lower right. The plate is designed with a scalloped rim and a broad border of heavily gilded, raised scroll and acanthus leaf motifs. The reverse side displays several marks including a black printed Cauldon England mark and a red-brown circular transfer mark for Brown-Westhead Moore and Co, Cauldon Place, England, which also identifies the retailer as Tiffany and Co New York. The title of the scene, Ruffed Grouse, is handwritten in red script on the reverse.
