Lot 33 Doulton Lambeth Stoneware RSPCA Dog Collecting Box, circa 1900
A Doulton Lambeth stoneware collecting box created for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The item features a modeled figure of a seated dog, rendered with a simplified, rounded form and finished in a mottled, pale celadon-green glaze. The dog sits atop a rectangular plinth with a mottled blue-gray glaze. The plinth features raised, molded lettering on all four sides. The front and back of the ceramic base read THE ROYAL SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS, while the sides read PLEASE HELP. The ceramic portion is mounted to a tiered wooden base with a dark mahogany finish. The underside of the wood base includes a small, metal-hinged trapdoor for the removal of coins. The underside retains fragments of old, degraded paper with partial printed letters including T be, He, ud, and ey. Handwritten inventory marks in blue ink on the underside include the number 128 and a diagonal slash mark.
