Lot 269 Limited Edition Boehm Porcelain Ivory Chest Relief Plaque, Tutankhamun Exhibition
This fine porcelain plaque was produced by the Edward Marshall Boehm studio to commemorate the landmark exhibition Treasures of Tutankhamun which toured the United States between 1976 and 1979 in celebration of the American Bicentennial. Titled Ivory Chest Relief, the rectangular plaque features high-relief molding depicting a male and female royal figure in traditional Egyptian attire interacting with stylized papyrus plants. The decoration utilizes polychrome glazes in shades of cobalt blue, terracotta, and cream, accented with extensive gilding. The plaque is presented in a contemporary faux bamboo-style silver-gilt frame. The reverse of the plaque is visible through a circular window in the paper backing and bears extensive inscriptions. The perimeter lists the hosting museums: National Gallery, Washington; Field Museum, Chicago; New Orleans Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Museum; Seattle Art Museum; and Metropolitan Museum of Art. The central text reads: Egypt Salutes the United States Bicentennial with the Exhibition of the Treasures of Tutankhamun 1976 to the Spring 1979. It further includes the Boehm maker mark with a stylized horse head and feather quill, the name Edward Marshall Boehm, and is marked Issue Limited Number 207.
