^Lot 114 Japanese Sumida Gawa Pottery Brown Lidded Jar

Item/Description: Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery lidded ovoid jar, with a flat-topped lid featuring a seated figure finial. Dating to the Meiji to early Showa Period, circa 1890-1923. Heavily potted stoneware with a ribbed brown ground exterior. The upper portion is partially covered with a thick, dripped flambe glaze descending from the rim in rich tones of earthy ochre, forest green, and dark chocolate brown. Features three dimensional polychrome-enameled relief figures of Buddhist monk, folkloric characters receiving offerings. The reverse features an applied white ceramic plaque marked with a blue underglaze signature for Inoue Ryosai, the family workshop of highly influential Tokyo potters who pioneered the Sumida Gawa style in the late 19th century. This piece was produced during the Inoue Ryosai workshop’s premier Tokyo period between 1890 and 1923. This traditional glaze predates the more vibrant red-orange palettes that became synonymous with the workshop's post-1924 Yokohama relocation.
