Lot 101 Japanese Satsuma Figural Tapered Ovoid Vase

Item/Description: Japanese Satsuma moriage figural vase dating to the Meiji Period, circa 1868-1912. Tapered ovoid body with twin sculptural handles at the shoulders. Crafted from cream-colored earthenware with a signature fine crackle glaze. Hole in base for planter or lamp. Extensively decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamels and heavy moriage (raised slip) detailing. Set against a rich verde green and gilt-patterned background, with a finely detailed central panel depicting geisha in traditional kimono within a garden landscape. This primary scene is densely framed by vibrant floral motifs, including a large purple peony and lush foliage, creating a highly embellished composition characteristic of the style. The reverse of the vessel features a more minimalist aesthetic, displaying four stylized, hand-painted orange and yellow floral blossoms set against a cream crackle-glaze ground with a weathered green-wash finish across the upper shoulders and handles.
