Lot 49 Signed Paul Rand IBM Rebus Lithograph Poster
Item/Description: Original, iconic IBM rebus lithograph poster on board signed by the artist, Paul Rand and gifted and dedicated to his friend, Lou Pauchaud. The word rebus comes from the Latin res (thing) and denotes representation of names, words and phrases by images, figures or letters. Whimsical depiction of three symbols to represent the IBM company: a wide eye, a bee and the letter M. In white type face the symbolism of each is explained: the eye for perception, insight and vision; the bee for industriousness, dedication and perseverance and the M for motivation, merit and moral strength. All qualities attributed to the honorable employees of IBM. Artist's signature, dedication and date lower right reads: "for my partner, Lou Pauchaud, 4.28.91 Paul Rand."
Paul Rand, born Peretz Rosenbaum, was essentially self taught, starting to draw at age three. He attended Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design and would go on to teach at Cooper Union and Yale University. Rand played a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of American advertising and branding in the 20th Century, turning advertising into modernist art. In 1956, Rand was hired by IBM to help shape the company’s global brand and design their logo. He would work for IBM for the next three decades creating some of his most famous designs including the Eye-Bee-M rebus, campaigns for Westinghouse and Cummins and creating the ABC, UPS and NeXT logos.
