Lot 47 Artist Signed Paul Rand '90 B. Franklin IBM Poster
Item/Description: Original, iconic offset lithograph by legendary modernist American graphic designer and art director, Paul Rand (American, 1914-1996). Commissioned by IBM, the work was created to celebrate 200 years of the genius of inventor, Benjamin Franklin: 1790-1990. One in a series of lithographs printed in several different colors. Signed by artist in blue pen lower right, above printed signature. Printed by Mossberg & Co., South Bend, IN
Paul Rand, born Peretz Rosenbaum, was essentially self taught. Though he would go on to attend Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design and Yale University. Rand played a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of American advertising and branding in the 20th Century, turning advertising into modernist art. In 1956, Rand was hired by IBM to help shape the company’s global brand and design their logo. He would work for IBM for three decades creating some of his most famous designs including the Eye-Bee-M rebus, campaigns for Westinghouse and Cummins and creating the ABC, UPS and NeXT logos.
