Item/Description: Original, untitled abstract painting by American artist Emily Mason. Signed and dated lower left: Emily Mason '81.
Emily Mason (American, 1932-2019) was an abstract painter and printmaker known for her style which combined Abstract Expressionist marks with a Color Field sensibility, Emily Mason (American, 1932-2019) regarded each of her paintings as a visual poem. Named after Emily Dickinson, Mason grew up around artists on account of her mother, the artist Alice Trumbull Mason, a co-founder of the American Abstract Artists.
Mason attended Bennington College from 1950 to 1952. In 1952, she transferred from Bennington College to Cooper Union, where she graduated in 1955. In 1956, she was awarded a two-year Fulbright Grant to paint in Venice, Italy and study at the Accademia di Belle Arti where she first experimented with blotting and transferring paint onto the surface of the canvas.
