Lot 308 1797 S-125 R-5 VF20
1797 S-125 R-5 VF20Sharpness VF35 but covered with fine porosity, strongest in a small patch close below the hair ribbon. There are microscopic specks of verdigris left of the date, and the only notable contact mark is a line of dull but relatively strong nicks under IT in UNITED. Partly glossy medium steel brown blending to chocolate in protected areas. Possibly retoned long ago. MDS, Breen state II, with obvious bulges at the date, bust, and into the field above. Struck with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW. Graded VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#2, his photo #26388. Not perfect but clearly one of the finest of this tough variety, and most of the top pieces have similar surfaces defects.Certificate Number: Pedigree: Ex William Van Roden, Stack's 5/2/1968:208-Dr. Hiram T. Ward 1978 (via Denis W. Loring)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
