Lot 276 1794 S-41 R-3 F12

1794 S-41 R-3 F12Sharpness VF35 but covered with fine to moderate roughness under partly glossy dark chocolate brown toning. No notable marks, but there are traces of microscopic verdigris in protected areas at the top of the obverse. Rare EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. This was the plate coin for the uncracked state of the reverse in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference Varieties of the United States Cents of the Year 1794. The edge is inscribed in tan ink "H-19" (although it looks more like H-14 now) and "Before broke" in cursive. Hays had a steady hand! The reverse is considerably more attractive than the obverse showing only microscopic roughness. Called VF35 net F12 and tied for CC#31 in the Noyes census, his photo #25907. Comes with a nice provenance.Certificate Number: Pedigree: Ex Dr. George P. French-B. Max Mehl 1929 FPL, lot 42-unknown-T. W. 3/1981-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
