Lot 138 1839 N-10 R3 Booby Head, PCGS graded MS64 Brown

1839 N-10 R3 Booby Head, PCGS graded MS64 BrownFrosty steel brown and light chocolate with very subtle overtones of light bluish steel. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is quite nice. A rather wide but very faint band of slightly darker steel toning extends from star 3 to the cheek where it fades out. The notable marks are a speck of carbon at the right top of the D in UNITED and another in the dentils under the wreath. Nicely struck E-MDS. The reverse is just starting to show microscopic die flowlines at the dentil tips. For many years this die variety was considered to be a late die state of N-5, but subsequent research has confirmed that, although the obverse is the same as N-5 in a later die state, the reverse is different. Newcomb had this one right, and we have fallen back into line. Called MS62 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21211. Bland says MS60 and CC#1. Our grade is MS60+.
