Lot 129 1839 N-4 R1 Silly Head, PCGS graded MS64 Brown
1839 N-4 R1 Silly Head, PCGS graded MS64 BrownLustrous golden light tan with light steel brown on the highpoints. A small spot of darker toning in the field close before the middle of the nose, a speck of similar toning at the upper point of star 4, and a tiny tick over the right side of the eye are the only defects, and only the spot at the nose is visible to the unaided eye. Sharply struck E-MDS with a dull horizontal dash over the dentils tips between the 3 & 9 in the date and a longer one near the dentils right of the 9. This is the Newcomb plate coin for the variety (Plate IX, Obverse 4; Plate X, Reverse A). Called MS65 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#4, his photo #27341. Our grade is MS63+. A spectacular "Silly Head" cent, and it comes with a great provenance. (The holder is lightly scuffed.)Certificate Number: 37231.64/13087618Pedigree: Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C.
