Lot 118 1838 N-11/13 R5 (as a die state) AU55

1838 N-11/13 R5 (as a die state) AU55Lustrous light brown with steel brown highpoints. Fine die flowlines cover the fields on both sides creating attractive cartwheel luster and this cent has excellent eye appeal. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The only marks are a half dozen small nicks at S-OF. Terminal die state, state d, with a relatively large cud break at star 1 that extends well inside the dentils nearly to the lower point of star 2. Newcomb called this die state his #13 variety, but we know it is really just a late state of N-11. This is the Newcomb plate coin for the N-13 variety (Plate IX, Obverse 13, Reverse L). Called MS60 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 and CC#3 of the N-13 die state, his photo #21202. Comes with a great provenance.Certificate Number: Pedigree: Ex Howard R.
