Lot 89 1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Small Letters, PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown

1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Small Letters, PCGS graded MS64 Red & BrownMellowed red fading to steel brown, nearly half the planchet showing some faded mint red color. Lustrous and very attractive with trivial marks. There are a few small spots of darker steel brown toning including one at the dentils under the 3 in the date and another under the first S in STATES. Just a few trivial contact marks including a thin vertical nick on the jawline and a horizontal one over the 83. MDS, die state c, with fine die flowlines covering the fields on both sides. The fine die line connecting the feet of the I & T in UNITED is gone. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21743. Bland says MS70- and CC#1. Our grade is MS63. Regardless of the census list used, this piece is one of the very finest known of the PHC/SL "Redbook" type, which is only available with this N-5 die variety. A great "Redbook Registry Set" coin.Certificate Number: 37145.64/31819706Pedigree: Ex C. David Pierce 1946-Abe Kosoff 12/3/1946 (privately)-R. E.
