Lot 27 Sharps U.S. New Model 1863 Breech-Loading Carbine
Sharps U.S. New Model 1863 Breech-Loading Carbine, #C3387, .50-70 cal., 22'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, walnut stock, blade front sight, and ''V''- notch rear sight. Carbine was converted to fixed cartridge circa 1868. Lockplate is marked ''R.S. LAWRENCE PAT. /APRIL 12th 1859'' and ''C. SHARPS PAT. /OCT. 15. 1852'' on the right; ''C. SHARPS PAT. /APRIL 12th 1848'' on the left. Sight is marked ''R.S. LAWRENCE/PATENTED/FEB. 15th.1859'' on top. Rifle is in fair to antique good condition. Receiver area is mostly brown colored with scattered rust, heavier on the lever, and the tang is cracked at the forward screw. Barrel is mostly dark brown, with some scattered rust and pitting. Stock shows very heavy use, with missing wood throughout, especially at the buttplate. Action works properly. Bore rates good, with defined rifling, and intermittent spots of light erosion.
