Lot 210 Winchester 1873 'U.S. Scout' .44-40 #17121

Winchester 1873 1st Model carbine with thumbprint, dust cover nickel plated, stock stamped U.S.S. 6, possibly "United States Scouts". Factory letter documents carbine (no finish listed), order number 11778 shipped May 8, 1878 with no other information listed. Approximately 30-50% original to the period nickel finish remains and areas where nickel has lifted show dark patina with some minor rust and pitting. Many small marks, scratches and dings consistent with frontier wear and use. Stocks are good with losses around butt plate and wrist. Rear sight a period V notch replacement of carbine sight otherwise correct small parts, mortised dust cover and early sight on the front band. The left side of front frame die stamped U.S. over 6. We have never seen another "scout" gun marked this way but a photograph of 3 Indian scouts holding nickeled Winchester 73's is included in the accompanying research folder with this lot. Fist model carbines are scarce and the nickel is period, although possibly applied outside the factory by Adams Plating or Hartley & Graham or another "jobber/ally".Note: This piece was the crown jewel of an old time collection and our consignor states "as fine as any museum or world class collection has on display."
