Lot 146 Springfield 1873 Trapdoor Carbine .45-70 #39311
Prime Custer range 1873 Springfield .45-70 carbine. This number is between 39253 and 39448. 39253 is listed as recovered at Slim Butte and 39448 is listed by Dumont in his book as "Direct Association". This carbine shows a dark, uncleaned brown patina with very light lock marking discernable, good U.S. on breech block, and readable serial number as listed. The stock is broken, cracked and has many losses of wood to use, exposure, and exposure to "campfires". The swivel on band removed otherwise complete. Lock works and bore rough but shootable. John Kopec collection. Kept by Kopec to his death as he felt as did his close friend, Sterling Fenn, that this carbine "was there and probably Indian captured". Large folder of research by Kopec and Fenn.
