Lot 378 Authentic Yoruba Headdress / Helmet Crest, Nigeria
West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba Peoples, very rare headdress dancing mask or helmet crest depicting a female ancestor with striking depth of color and detail in a well patinated brown wood. Overpainted to the cervices in indigo blue and highlighted in white pigments to the teeth and eyes. Appraised in August, 2005 by Charles D Miller III (see photos for picture of insurance appraisal). This object has been independently reviewed in person by a member of the Ethnic Arts Council as, "made for use and used". Size 16" H, 9 3/4" W. Condition: good with signs of wear and ritual use to the holes of the bowl.. Provenance: Purchased circa 1979.. Family collection of an esteemed diplomat and ambassador amassed during travel and work circa 1960-1990s in the medical field providing charitable advanced medical care throughout the African continent and internationally.
