Springfield Model 1896 Krag-Jorgensen Bolt Action Saddle Ring Carbine, #73379, .30-40 CF cal., 22'' round barrel with tall pinned-blade front and adjustable leaf rear (marked ''C'' for Carbine) sights, has a unique front barrel band that acts as a sight protector; receiver is marked ''U.S.'' over ''Model 1896. Springfield Armory. 73379'' on left, has a sliding top bolt with knurled rear knob, right-side cartridge magazine with hinged loading gate having a large thumb piece, and a sling bar and ring mounted opposite; oil-finished walnut forestock, handguard and buttstock having a flat buttplate with a hinged door opening to a trap for a jointed cleaning rod (not present). Mfg'd ca. 1897. Condition is fine, the barrel retaining approx. 75% original blue mixing with age toning, the balance of the metal being smooth gunmetal gray with sharp edges and markings throughout. Stocks are solid and smooth having nice grain and color and perhaps an added coat of finish; butt trap contains a 3.25'' bright-metal oil tin. Action is smooth; bore shines with light oxidation toward muzzle and defined rifling. This 1896 Krag carbine is the model that Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders used to storm Cuba's San Juan Hill in 1898. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)*
