Lot 218a Northern Plains War Shirt

Outstanding early example of Northern Plains scout or physical warring shirt, with designs of upper Missouri, Blackfeet, or Sioux, circa approximately 1860's-1870's. Comprised of brain tanned deerskin, sinew sewn with wonderful fringe and parallel overlapped porcupine quillwork, with blue over yellow, indicating a high ranking society member in Lakota Society. Bear claw motif shown throughout front, back and sleeves, with wear and condition consumerate with age. Displays beautifully. Provenance: Private Wyoming collection.
