^Lot 1455 Chinese marked German GEW 98 Bolt Action Rifle

Chinese marked German GEW 98 Bolt Action Rifle, by Amberg, #6958, 8mm Mauser cal., 29'' barrel, no finish, pistol-grip wood stock, inverted ''V'' front sight, ''roller coaster'' rear sight, hooked front band, with cleaning rod. Rifle also features what looks a like a period correct sling without the detachable metal swivel. Right side of buttstock with a deep and clear stamp of Chinese characters as well as ''670060''. The Amberg markings on the receiver ring are worn but still partially visible; appears to have been dated ''1914''. Serial number was poorly re-stamped near the original number; that and other proofmarks, etc. are worn, some are still legible. Numbers do not match. Import marked on the left side of the barrel. Metal has toned to a brown patina with a general light texture or very fine pitting. Wood rates fair to good with nice clear Chinese markings, the balance with some oil darkening; forend with a few larger gouges to the right side and handguard. Good action; dark frosted bore with plenty of rifling left. Est.: $150-$300. (C&R)
