Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1881 Trapdoor "Forager" Shotgun
These forager shotguns were manufactured in the early 1880s by the Springfield Armory using primarily Civil War musket stocks and barrels and modified Model 1873 trapdoor breechblock adapted for 20 gauge brass shot shells and were used at remote outposts into the early 20th century. Few have survived since most experienced years of hard use and neglect.
