Continental Empire–Biedermeier Secrétaire à Abattant with Mirrored Architectural Interior a
Description Continental secrétaire à abattant, probably German or Austrian, in the Empire-to-Biedermeier transition, circa 1825–1835. Veneered over pine in a warm-toned figured wood, the exact primary veneer is difficult to confirm. The drop front opens to a striking fitted interior with mirrored back, blackened architectural framing, gilt-highlighted columns, pigeonholes, multiple small drawers, and a concealed secret compartment. The exterior and highly theatrical interior are very much in keeping with Central European furniture made as Empire classicism softened into early Biedermeier taste. Biedermeier developed chiefly in Germany and Austria, while retaining simplified forms derived from Empire design. Condition All drawers appear present, functional, and generally sound. The piece shows an old restoration, likely early 20th century, with visible veneer patching and surface retouching. There are losses and wear to the black lacquered writing surface and interior framing, visible age cracks and veneer splits, and general scratches and use wear consistent with age, but that add interest. The interior remains unusually elaborate and attractive, and the secret compartment is a strong selling feature. A highly decorative and desirable early 19th-century secrétaire. A piece with character!

Karlinsky is closely associated with Austrian landscape painting, and his auction history shows a steady market for signed oils, with stronger prices for attractive, fully resolved landscape compositions. The present work shows a sunlit rocky escarpment descending toward a winding river valley, painted in warm earth tones with an atmospheric, slightly hazy distance. The handling is consistent with Karlinsky’s landscape manner around the turn of the century, and the painting retains a good decorative scale at 39 x 31 in., housed in a substantial ornate gilt frame measuring 43 x 51 in. The frame adds meaningful presentation value, though it should be treated as a bonus rather than the primary driver of value. Condition Painting appears in good overall condition, signed lower right and dated 1901. The frame has losses to ornamental elements and localized wear. Those losses reduce the frame’s standalone value, but it still presents impressively on the wall and supports the lot well.

Collection of 21 framed 19th-century portrait engravings
Collection of twenty-one small 19th-century engraved portraits, each presented in a narrow ebonised frame with gilt inner beading. The prints, finely worked in black on cream paper, depict various named historical sitters- predominantly ladies in early 19th-century dress with a few male figures-each identified in script in the lower margin. Most appear to be stipple or line engravings after contemporary painted portraits, likely issued as book or portfolio plates and subsequently framed en suite. Several retain remnants of old backing labels to the reverse. An attractive, period set for decorative or scholarly display.

Richly printed and delicately hand-coloured in pastel tones with Clarke’s typical humorous detail and crowded narrative vignettes. The work bears the artist’s small red monogram chop to the lower image, with the title and edition number inscribed in pencil in the lower margin and signed at lower right “Graham Clarke.” Unframed.

The group displays the refined white porcelain body and restrained hand-painted decoration for which Herend is known, making it well suited for elegant table use or cabinet display. A pleasing partial service with strong maker recognition and a classic Continental presentation. One reverse retains the blue underglaze Herend shield mark. Condition appears very good overall, with light underside wear and no visible chips, cracks, or restorations.
Three Continental Porcelain Cabinet Plates, Including Herend and St. Martin Email de Limoges
Associated group of three Continental porcelain cabinet plates, comprising a Herend, Hungary hand-painted floral plate with scalloped basketweave-molded rim and gilt edge, together with two St. Martin / Email de Limoges decorator plates, one centered with a brightly colored stylized Easter egg and the other with a richly painted floral bouquet. Though not a matching set, the lot forms an attractive assembled group of late 20th-century European decorative porcelain, combining the refined white body and hand-painted floral manner associated with Herend with the ornamental appeal of French decorator porcelain. Suitable for cabinet display or spring and floral-themed table decoration. Condition appears good overall, with light underside wear and no visible chips or cracks.

Attributed to Stöhr, 1911 Coastal Scene

Austrian or Bavarian school, Stimmungsmalerei village/town scene.
Vertical architectural townscape, oil on board, depicting an old Central European street with irregular stone buildings, a fortified tower-like structure, and a vaulted passage opening into the lane beyond. The handling is loose but controlled, with broken brushwork and tonal modelling typical of late naturalist Central European painting with impressionistic influence. Stylistically, the work fits well within the tradition of Austrian or South German regional painting, and more broadly the Austro-Hungarian cultural sphere, where painters often treated old village and small-town architecture in a restrained, mood-driven manner. The picture is best understood as a tonal naturalist / Stimmungsmalerei village scene, probably dating to about 1895–1925. The subject appears to represent an old provincial or medieval street rather than a formal topographical view, with the emphasis placed on atmosphere, age, and architectural character. Presented in a later dark-stained wood frame with inner gilt liner. Signature present but illegitimate. Dimensions: Frame: 15 x 18 in.
Alois Beran-Polly Street Scene
Framed oil on board by Alois Beran-Polly depicting a narrow street with clustered buildings and receding perspective. Reverse bears identifying inscription; minor surface wear and age-related marks.

One sheet is after Leopold Kupelwieser and shows a bust portrait of Schubert; the other, after Franz von Schober, appears titled Vogl und Schubert. The lot is presented as a matched pair in later black frames with wide mats and offers clear appeal as Viennese musical-historical ephemera rather than as original 19th-century drawings. Visible condition includes light toning, minor spotting, and modest frame wear; not examined out of frame.
Pair of Small Framed Continental Landscape Studies
Associated pair of small framed Continental landscape studies, comprising a more finished Alpine lake and village view with church steeple, mountain ridge, and shoreline, together with a smaller, more abstracted landscape sketch in muted earth and blue tones. The lot is not a formal matching pair, but the two works sit well together as decorative cabinet or wall pictures, offering contrasting levels of finish and a pleasing period palette. The larger painting has the character of a Central European scenic view, while the smaller work reads as a compact landscape study or color sketch. Condition consistent with age and framing, including light frame wear, old backing wear, and visible spotting or discoloration to the mount area of the smaller work.
Large Gilt Framed Wall Mirror
Large rectangular wall mirror in an ornate gilt frame with repeating molded ornament to the inner and outer edges. General wear to gilt surface and frame edges consistent with age and use.
